KUCHING, May 18: Akhtar Shauqi Aini Mohd Dom, the Sarawakian pétanque athlete who brought back a bronze medal from the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), is eyeing a gold medal this coming Sukma (Malaysia Games) Sarawak 2024.

Hailing from Kampung Tanjung Bundang in Kota Samarahan, Akhtar, 16, said he is targeting the achievement either in the Triple or Double category.

“I have participated in the Sukma games twice and won one bronze medal previously in Sukma 2022, which was held in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

Akhtar told reporters this during an appreciation ceremony for Sarawak pétanque athletes winning bronze at Cambodia Sea Games held at Arena Pentaque Sarawak, Kampung Santubong, here today.

Among other pétanque athletes celebrated in the ceremony were Nur Durratul Ifrah Yazit, 21, who also won a bronze medal in the SEA Games and her older sister, Nur Durratul Hikmah Yazit, 24.

However, he said, they are still waiting for approval from the Sukma Supreme Committee, which will meet this June.

“So we have more than a year to prepare for our athletes,” he added. — DayakDaily
