KUCHING, May 18: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants the nation to emulate Sarawak’s core values of tolerance and mutual respect among the people of different races and religions to make Malaysia prosper.

In Sarawak, Anwar emphasised how its people have practised the Islamic injunction of ‘lita’arafu’ for generations, which means knowing and understanding each other.

“This is also a core value in Sarawak that we hope to nurture in our Malaysia Madani nation.

“Malaysia Madani’s concept involves pursuing new ideas and technology and moving forward. On the other hand, we must not forget our morals and values, which we’ve inherited from the past as we continue to build our nation,” he said at the opening of Imam As-Syafi’i International Conference 2023 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching today.

Praising Sarawak’s Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the state government for maintaining commendable racial harmony by practising a moderate Islamic approach, Anwar is optimistic that this will strengthen Malaysia.

The Sarawak Mufti Department and the Academy of Islamic Studies Universiti Malaya jointly organised the Imam As-Syafi’i International Conference 2023.

Some 1,300 participants, including experts from Malaysia, Jordan, Yamen, Brunei Darussalam, and Indonesia, came together for the two-day event. — DayakDaily
