KUCHING, March 6: The Community Development Department (Kemas) has allocated RM4 million this year to upgrade and refurbish preschools (Tabika) and childcare centres (Taska) in Sarawak and Sabah.

According to a TVS news report, Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Rubiah Wang, stated that the funding is part of a special RM40 million allocation approved for upgrading works and the procurement of equipment for Kemas-operated Tabika and Taska nationwide.

“Kemas is committed to improving and upgrading its Tabika and Taska buildings across the country, particularly in Sarawak and Sabah, where many facilities are still in poor condition and require urgent attention.

“The ministry, through Kemas, also conducts regular monitoring to assess the physical condition of these buildings throughout the year,” she said during Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Rubiah was responding to a question from Mohamad Shafizan Kepli (Gabungan Parti Sarawak – Batang Lupar), who inquired whether there were large-scale plans to upgrade dilapidated Kemas preschools and kindergartens in Sarawak and Sabah, similar to the government’s initiative to eliminate rundown schools and clinics.

She further explained that the allocation is determined based on current needs and the status of the buildings, whether they are owned by Kemas or rented.

Additionally, Rubiah announced that RM460,000 has been approved for three Tabika Kemas refurbishment projects in the Batang Lupar parliamentary constituency.

“The three projects approved for 2025 include the refurbishment of Tabika Kemas Kampung Sungai Ladong (RM130,000), Tabika Kemas Kampung Entangor Sebuya (RM130,000), and Tabika Kemas Kampung Tambak (RM200,000),” she added. — DayakDaily
