Devong Anyie remembered as key figure in advancing education, social progress for Orang Ulu community

KUCHING, April 14: The late Datin Seri Devong Anyie has been remembered as a pioneering figure in advancing education and social development for the Orang Ulu community, particularly in Belaga, with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg describing her as an extraordinary woman who left a lasting legacy.

According to a TVS news report, Abang Johari expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Devong, a respected figure in rural development and a long-serving member of the Sarawak Badan Amal Tenaga Isteri-Isteri (SABATI), highlighting her tireless efforts in empowering rural communities through education and social awareness during the 1980s.

“We have lost a remarkable woman, especially among the Orang Ulu, who contributed significantly by raising awareness and educating the community,” he said during a visit to the wake at the Tajang Family Residence here yesterday (April 13).

Reflecting on his time working alongside Devong in Belaga when he was Deputy Minister, Abang Johari commended her dedication to grassroots outreach, particularly in promoting the importance of education to rural residents.

“Her social work and her efforts to educate the community about the value of education form a major part of her legacy, especially among the Orang Ulu in Belaga,” he said.

Devong is also remembered for championing the role of women and advocating for the rights of rural communities. A long-time SABATI member, she was involved in numerous initiatives aimed at uplifting underprivileged groups.

A final tribute was held at her residence at No 79, Elopura Villa, Bukit Antu, Jalan Batu Lintang Lima, and continued until this morning.

Among the dignitaries present to pay their respects were Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, and Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development (Commodity and Regional Development), Datuk Martin Ben.

Her remains were taken to her hometown in Uma Nyaving, Bakun Resettlement Scheme, Belaga, for burial. — DayakDaily
