SIEM REAP, Feb 13: Zunita Sedini, the mother of 21-year-old Yusuf Islam Abdul Halik, who is one of the 47 Malaysians being detained in Cambodia, cannot wait to meet her eldest son.

Upon arrival at Siem Reap International Airport this morning, Zunita, 42, disclosed that her heart was pounding like mad the moment the aircraft departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA2) for Cambodia.

The flight departed at 6.45am, and during the 2-hour flight, Zunita cried as she looked forward to seeing his son later today.

It was believed that Yusuf and the 46 other Malaysians, who have been detained by the Cambodian authorities since Dec 16 last year, were tricked by a human trafficking syndicate.

They were promised lucrative jobs with wages of up to US$1,500 (about RM6,000), but ended up in a provincial jail for alleged illegal online gambling.

“I hope he will be released soon, together with the other prisoners,” said Zunita.

The 110km journey to the prison from Siem Reap International Airport will take approximately 90 minutes.

Julau MP Larry Sng, together with a delegation of reporters, another victim’s sister Chong Mei Lan and two other families are now on their way to Banteay Meanchey Provincial Prison to check on the condition of the detainees, 44 of whom are Sarawakians. — DayakDaily
