KUCHING, June 21: A 20-year-old man was fined RM800 or sentenced to two weeks in jail by the Magistrate’s Court today after he pleaded guilty to filing a false police report, claiming he had been robbed, with the intent to gain the attention of his father.
The accused, who is a student from a local higher learning institution, pleaded guilty under Section 182 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
According to the charge, the accused verbally informed the police that he had been robbed while returning home from his studies. The false report was lodged at the Kota Sentosa police station around 9pm on March 28, 2023.
The accused claimed he was kicked from behind by one of three unknown individuals, causing him to fall by the roadside. The three men were allegedly on two motorcycles, with one brandishing a knife and seizing his backpack containing RM200 and several passport-sized photos.
However, investigations revealed no such incident had occurred. The accused admitted to fabricating the story to see if his father still cared for him.
According to the accused, he felt neglected since his father remarried seven years ago, and the relationship had further strained following his parents’ divorce, with his mother relocating to Kuala Lumpur and the recent death of his grandfather, which left him living alone in a village in Bau.
The prosecution was conducted by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused was unrepresented. — DayakDaily
