KUCHING, July 6: Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas states that the charitable trust of Sarawak’s Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) plans to expand into socio-economic programmes soon.
Uggah, who is also the minister-in-charge of Unifor, stated in a statement that the trust was seeking funding for its plans.
“While Unifor helps in the physical development and maintenance of various houses of worship, its charitable trust will focus on socio-economic programmes to help deserving folks,” he said after receiving a cheque for RM1 million from Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) for the trust here today.
Petros chairman Tan Sri Hamid Bugo presented the cheque to Uggah in the presence of some of the trust board of directors, including Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Datuk Janang Bungsu, Unifor director Datuk Jack Aman.
Also present were Petros chief executive officer Janin Girie and Petros Human Resource and Corporate Communications vice president Ismail Said.
Uggah also hoped that more people in the private sector would ‘be kind enough’ to help Unifor’s Charitable Trust.
Meanwhile, in Hamid’s speech, he said Petros was honoured to help Unifor in its tasks and responsibilities.
“I hope that with our contribution, Unifor can do much more in assisting our society,” he said.
He also thanked the State government for its continuing strong support to Petros in all its activities.
“We look forward to more support with some of the new programmes that we are coming up with,” he added.
Unifor and its charitable trust are two different entities, serving different agendas and objectives.
Unifor is a state government unit that offers financial assistance to non-Muslim houses of worship and mission schools in Sarawak.
In contrast, the Unifor Charitable Trust was established in 2018 in accordance with the Charitable Trust Ordinance of 1994. Its primary purpose is to engage in activities that promote the welfare of the non-Muslim community within the State. — DayakDaily
