BINTULU, Oct 21: The Opposition cannot pose any threat to the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) State government even if they were to win this Jepak by-election, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

He was referring to Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) and Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) who both fielded candidates to challenge GPS candidate Iskandar Turkee in Jepak, which is known to be Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu’s (PBB) stronghold.

“I really don’t know the intentions of the Opposition (who are contesting). They know they can’t (win)… Even if they win, they can’t pose any threat to the current State government.

“And this (GPS) government already has its foundation and policy. So, there’s nothing they can do (to change things around),” he told reporters during the Jepak by-election nomination process at Bintulu Civic Centre today.

Awang Tengah, who is also PBB senior vice-president, said GPS will not be overconfident, although they believe victory is on their side.

In terms of numbers, he said he hopes to see an increase in the number of votes for GPS as compared to previous elections.

In the 2021 Sarawak Election, former Jepak assemblyman late Datuk Talib Zulpilip retained Jepak by securing 6,277 votes, against Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Rabaáh Tudin (2,034 votes), PBK’s Stevenson (587 votes) and independent candidate Tuah Kazan (141 votes). — DayakDaily
