KUCHING, March 18: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas likened online scams to the deadly ‘Taju Remaong’ or the mystical tiger’s bait in Iban legends.
Conveying worries over the growing number of Sarawakians becoming victims of online scams, Uggah said that according to legend, the ‘Remaong’, or mystical tiger, would seek his victims by baiting them with fruits or other food in the jungle.
“Whoever picked them up or ate them, he or she is doomed. The tiger will come for him or her, and death is inevitable.
“Online scam calls are the same. The baits are promises of big monetary rewards, but in the end, the victim will lose everything,” he said during a courtesy call from Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata to his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.
He added that to avoid becoming victims, people should not easily fall for the promises of great rewards made in any such calls.
Meanwhile, Uggah congratulated the police force for their commitment, loyalty, and sacrifices in keeping Sarawak safe.
He said the tasks and responsibilities are very challenging given Sarawak’s sheer size and the long land or sea borders.
“But you all have been doing excellent jobs,” he said. — DayakDaily
