KUCHING, March 24: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local associations must emphasise efforts to contribute to Sarawak’s nation-building, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

According to him, Sarawak’s nation-building is a duty shared by all and should not be left solely to the Sarawak government.

For instance, he pointed out that initiatives taken by the Sarawak government in taking over Bintulu Port and Bakun Dam from the federal government are part of Sarawak’s nation-building agenda that allows income generation for Sarawak.

He said that, in turn, it would allow the Sarawak government to provide better facilities, including healthcare services, for Sarawakians.

In addition, he said that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s plan to provide free tertiary education at Sarawak-owned universities is also part of Sarawak’s development efforts.

“Previously, we did not have the financial capability, but now, with the available resources, we are doing something that would benefit Sarawak.

“Therefore, let us continue our efforts to build a brighter future for Sarawak, and by 2030, we look forward for the State to achieve a high-income status,” he added.

During the ceremony, Dr Sim presented cheques to 45 NGOs and associations from Kuching, Sri Aman, and Siburan. — DayakDaily
