KUCHING, Jan 19: Sarawak’s vibrant spirit of unity and tradition took centre stage as the Kenyalang Chinese New Year (CNY) Festive Sale 2025 kicked off at Kenyalang Park Commercial Centre.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian praised the event for being the most traditional CNY bazaar in Kuching, a highly anticipated annual event for locals and Sarawakians returning home.
“Even though there are now a few more CNY bazaars, this one (Kenyalang CNY bazaar) remains the most traditional. For our ‘Anak-Anak Sarawak’ who are working elsewhere, they always look forward to this bazaar.
“What you’ll find at this bazaar is truly interesting. There are more than 264 stalls for two weeks, and the vendors are not only Chinese but represent all races.
“This shows the spirit of Sarawak—where we celebrate, come together, and sell side-by-side, regardless of whether you are Chinese, Dayak, or Malay. And after this, we’ll all gain a little weight together! We are very happy, and we are proud that this tradition continues,” he told reporters after opening the Kenyalang CNY Festive Sale 2025 last night (Jan 18) at Kenyalang Park Commercial Centre here.
Dr Sim, who is also the Sarawak Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government (MPHLG), emphasised the significance of the CNY bazaar, especially for Sarawakians living overseas.
“More importantly, for our ‘Anak-Anak Sarawak’, many of whom work overseas, this is the time of year they come home.
“It’s not just for family reunions, but also to learn more about Sarawak. As I’ve mentioned, Sarawak is in the process of nation-building, and new opportunities are arising that they might not have access to elsewhere.
“Even if they are overseas, they can still play a role in contributing to Sarawak’s development. We want all ‘Anak-Anak Sarawak’ not only to be proud of Sarawak but also to contribute to making Sarawak great again. That’s how important this is,” he remarked.
The Deputy Premier further urged attendees to drive safely amidst the high traffic during the festive period, emphasising the importance of enjoying the holiday with loved ones while contributing to the continued success of Sarawak’s growth.
Meanwhile, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng highlighted the uniqueness of the CNY bazaar, noting that despite the growing presence of supermarkets, the bazaar thrives due to its creativity and cultural engagement.
Wee also underscored the role of the council in supporting not just urban maintenance but also the social economy.
“We are not just about glass cutting, cleaning, and waste management; we are deeply involved in fostering social connections and maintaining the cultural fabric of our community,” he added. — DayakDaily
