KUCHING, Aug 10: Sarawak government’s annual RM10 million grant for Chinese private schools help to pay five to six months of teachers’ salaries, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Dr Sim Kui Hian.
According to a recorded video posted on social media on Aug 8, he said the amount of money helps to cover a significant portion of the schools’ operational expenses, equating to five to seven months of teachers’ salaries in some of the schools.
“The Sarawak Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government continues to support Chinese private schools by allocating RM10 million annually to assist the schools’ operational costs.
“In Sarawak, Chinese schools are open to students of all races and religions, which is why the Sarawak government has funded the Sarawak Chinese Middle Schools for the past ten years.
“It began with (late Pehin Sri) Adenan Satem 10 years ago with a RM3 million grant for the first year, which was continued by Abang Jo (Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) and gradually increased by RM1 million until 2021. The point is that it surpassed RM10 million,” he stated.
On July 3, 14 Chinese private schools have received a grant of RM10 million from the Sarawak state government
The grant was presented by Premier to Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming, who represented Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Board, in a ceremony at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here. — DayakDaily
