KUCHING, Feb 16: Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, has confirmed today that the Sarawak government has proposed a candidate for the post of Dewan Negara president.

However, he refused to reveal the name of the candidate.

“We submitted one name only, so now we wait (for the swearing-in ceremony),” he told reporters when met after a ceremony to handover compensation cheques to landowners for the land acquisition for ‘Development of Public Transportation and Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) – Sungai Batu Depot’ project held at Yayasan Sarawak here today.

Speculation has been rife that the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bukit Mas, Datuk Mutang Tagal, is the candidate proposed by the Sarawak government to take over the post from Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who stepped down to become the eighth Sarawak Governor last month.

In a previous report, reliable sources told DayakDaily that the 68-year-old Australian-trained lawyer will be sworn in next Monday (Feb 19).

If elected to the post, Mutang will be the first Dayak appointed as the Dewan Negara president. — DayakDaily
