KUCHING, Sept 19: Sarawak Deputy Premier and Batu Kawah assemblyman, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, has emphasised that balancing development with environmental sustainability is a challenging but necessary task for the future of the State.
According to a press statement, Dr Sim in addressing the pressing global issue of climate change, stated that Sarawak is not immune to its impact. He was speaking at a ceremony to hand over financial grants to 45 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs), Chinese primary school management boards, Chinese independent secondary school alumni associations, churches, and temples.
He highlighted the critical role NGOs play in this context, noting that they serve as a vital bridge between the government and the people.
“NGOs foster camaraderie, welfare, community safety, and development among their members,” Dr Sim said.
He further urged these organisations to actively support the government’s green technology and renewable energy initiatives, which are essential in the fight against climate change.
Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government (MPHLG), called on NGOs and communities to take small, yet impactful, steps toward environmental protection in their daily lives, such as reducing waste, promoting community greening, and lowering energy consumption.
While reiterating the Sarawak government’s commitment to driving development across the State, the minister stressed that such efforts require the collective support of the entire community.
“We must work together to ensure Sarawak remains the beloved home we cherish,” he added. — DayakDaily
