KUCHING, Oct 9: Provocation has no place in Sarawak’s multiracial and multireligious society, where the culture of respect, understanding and honouring one another has long been a cornerstone of daily life.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said Sarawak’s strength lies in its people’s ability to live harmoniously and celebrate diversity without resorting to divisive behaviour or attention-seeking provocation.
“Here in Sarawak, we work the talk. Unlike some other people in Malaysia who purposely provoke others for attention, that is not the Sarawak way,” he said during the ‘switching on’ of the Deepavali lights at the White Cat statue at Jalan Padungan tonight.

Dr Sim emphasised that Sarawak’s unique unity is built on mutual respect and inclusion, values that continue to define the State as a model for the rest of Malaysia.
“Sarawak is unique. Its people do not intentionally provoke each other or create division. The State is renowned for its unity, and its people are known for respecting and honouring one another,” he said.
He reminded Malaysians that true nation-building comes from sincerity and cooperation, not from using provocation as a means of publicity or political gain.
“We know how to come together to unite, and this is so important for Sarawak in nation-building,” Dr Sim said, noting that the State’s harmony has allowed it to progress collectively.
He also urged Sarawakians to continue working together toward achieving the Premier’s vision of a prosperous, progressive, and environmentally sustainable future by 2030.
“In Sarawak, we always live harmoniously, respect each other, and celebrate together to be inclusive and united so that by 2030, we will be a different Sarawak,” he said.
Dr Sim added that if other parts of Malaysia hope to enjoy the same level of stability and cohesion, they should emulate Sarawak’s approach.
“We are proud to lead by example, refraining from divisive and provocative publicity,” he said.
Also present were Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, his deputy Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, and Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Committee president Shankar Ram Asnani. -DayakDaily
