KUCHING, March 10: The Sarawak government is committed to internationalising its youth as part of its broader development policy, said Deputy Minister for Youth, Sport, and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu.

Speaking at the 70th JCI Kuching Installation and Awards Night at a local hotel last night (March 9), he emphasised the importance of young Sarawakians stepping out of their comfort zones and embracing global opportunities to enhance their skills and competitiveness.

“Our policy is to internationalise Sarawakian youth. This is a big platform that organisations like Junior Chamber International (JCI) can leverage.

“If we can improve ourselves and expand our reach, it will be much better for everyone. We must not remain comfortable in our own realm but instead move forward,” he said.

He further highlighted the role of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in achieving this goal, urging young people to embrace innovation.

“AI is the next thing we need to work on. The faster we embrace it, the faster we advance,” he remarked, noting that technological adoption is key to staying ahead in the rapidly evolving global landscape.

The minister also underscored the importance of unity and harmony in Sarawak, emphasising that all communities must work together to build a better future.

“We have no differences—we are all Sarawakians. What we do today will shape a better future for ourselves and our children,” he added.

In support of youth-driven initiatives, Gerald Rentap announced that JCI Kuching would receive RM20,000 to further their programmes and activities.

He encouraged them to utilise the funds effectively to empower young leaders and drive meaningful change.

Gerald Rentap also recognised JCI Kuching’s role in contributing to Sarawak’s success at last year’s Sukma Games.

Furthermore, the minister announced the upcoming Sustainable Development Award, set for September, as a significant platform to recognise individuals and organisations contributing to Sarawak’s growth.

“This is a big effort, and I want to see great initiatives that align with our vision for a better future,” he said.
