KUCHING, June 17: A delegation from Sarawak visited Jeju Island Global Geoparks to learn, gain experiences, and ideas to promote Sarawak Delta Geopark for UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp) recognition.
The seven day visit began on June 14 and was led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who is also Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development and Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment.
The objectives of the visit are to learn how South Korea manages Jeju UGGp particularly on the community involvement activities, governance, socio-economic development, geotourism including to share views and knowledge on geopark management as well as to foster relationship through sistership geopark concept with Jeju UGGp, and promote Sarawak Delta Geopark (SDGp) and Sarawak’s intention to obtain UGGp status.
The visit included a briefing by the UGGp managers, briefing on SDGp, discussion sessions, and field visits the gallery, geosite, biosite, cultural heritage site, community project, and many others.
“Sarawak has a lot to emulate from Jeju Island UGGp, especially on local community involvement,” said Awang Tengah in a statement today.
Jeju Island was chosen as Sarawak is impressed with the achievements of Jeju Island which has achieved UNESCO’s coveted ‘Triple Crown’; recognition as a Biosphere Reserve, World Natural Heritage and Global Geopark.
Among those in attendance were Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts/Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Deputy Minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh and the others. — DayakDaily
