KUCHING, June 17: A 60-year-old local woman lost a total of RM133,432 after being scammed through a fake part-time job offer.
Sarawak police commissioner Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri in a statement today said that after leaving her contact number on the social media platform Facebook, the victim was contacted by a suspect with an unknown number claiming to have a job for her.
“She was later was given a cloud website address where she was required to order goods and pay for it herself.
“Attracted by the offers which promises 35 per cent returns in commission, the victim then made 24 transactions amounting to RM133,432 from three of her bank accounts between April 12 and May 11 to seven different bank accounts.
“The victim only realised she was scammed after only receiving RM43,00 in return and the suspect could not be contacted,” he said.
Mohd Azman also advised members of the public to not be easily deceived by job offers through social media.
“The pubic are also advised not to entertain any unknown phone calls. Notify your partner, friend or family members when receiving such calls, including checking with the police, bank or related agencies for confirmation,” he added.
Members of the public can contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) by dialing 997 if they have fallen victim to cyber scams (phone scams, love scams, e-commerce scams, non-existence loans, and similar cases) or have made transactions to suspicious bank accounts or e-wallets.
They can also download the Whoscall application to help decide whether or not to answer incoming phone calls, and check suspicious phone numbers and bank accounts through the check scammers CCID application or via http://semakmule.rmp.gov.my before engaging in any financial transaction. — DayakDaily
