MIRI, Jan 4: The long-delayed construction of SMK Tudan, originally scheduled for completion four years ago, is finally set to resume.
The delay, attributed to structural issues and non-compliance with specifications, has been a source of frustration for the community.
Sarawak’s Minister for Transport and Senadin assemblyman, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, disclosed the latest updates during the SK Tudan Jaya Primary Six graduation ceremony today.
“I’ve brought up this matter repeatedly and regret that it has yet to be resolved. I hope this will finally move forward,” said Lee, expressing disappointment over the prolonged delay.
The school’s construction was halted after cracks and other safety concerns were identified by the Public Works Department (JKR).
According to Lee, rectification works are necessary to make the building safe for use.
“The issue lies with the school building itself. Some structures are not safe, and a lot of remedial work is needed,” he explained.
While questions were raised about the role of the contractor, Lee clarified that the project falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, which awarded the original contract.
“I don’t know what went wrong, but the Ministry of Education is responsible. SK Tudan Jaya, which was built at the same time, has already been in use, but SMK Tudan remains unfinished,” he noted.
The Education Department has announced plans to retender the project early this year, with construction targeted to resume in June.
Lee expressed hope that the rectification work can be completed by 2026, allowing the school to finally open.
The delay has created significant strain on nearby schools, particularly SMK Merbau and SMK Pujut, which are now operating beyond capacity with nearly 3,000 and over 2,000 students, respectively.
SMK Tudan is intended to alleviate overcrowding by accommodating students from SK Tudan Jaya and other nearby primary schools.
“There is an urgent need for this secondary school. SMK Tudan will cater to increasing student numbers from SMK Merbau and SMK Pujut. The situation is becoming untenable,” Lee emphasised.
Also present at the SK Tudan Jaya graduation ceremony were its headmistress, Jessica Mahali, and Miri Education Office (PPD Miri) officer Mariam Monek. — DayakDaily
