KUCHING, May 4: A village resident in Debak in Betong who tested positive for Covid-19 sparked a new Covid-19 cluster in Betong after infecting 11 other villagers, thus forming the Bungey Cluster.

According to reports from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today, the index case of the community cluster is Case 29,378, a local who was identified through symptomatic screening at a healthcare facility.

The index case underwent Covid-19 screening on April 26 and the rapid test polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR) results returned positive on April 28.

It was believed that the patient got the Covid-19 infection from the community.

Thereafter, the State Health Department conducted active case detection (ACD) on family members and social contacts of the index case.

As a result, 11 new positive Covid-19 cases were identified.

So far, a total of 497 individuals in the village have been swabbed for Covid-19.

From this, 12 individuals tested positive, 392 individuals tested negative and 93 individuals are awaiting Covid-19 swab test results.

SDMC disclosed the Bungey Cluster index case has been admitted to Sarawak General Hospital for treatment while the 11 other positive cases in the cluster were referred to Betong low risk quarantine and treatment centres for treatment and isolation.
