KUCHING, March 29: Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has been urged to upgrade the zebra crossing at the Jalan College junction in Batu Lintang for the safety of students.
George Lam, a special assistant to Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, said they had received feedback from a student’s parent about a traffic light pole that has been knocked down by a vehicle which has yet to be reinstalled by DBKU.
According to him, during a recent inspection, they also found out that the zebra crossing at the traffic light had faded.
“Besides that, the duration of traffic lights for pedestrians to walk across Jalan Batu Lintang is only 17 seconds which requires pedestrians to run in order to cross the road on time.
“Furthermore, the zebra crossing for pedestrians to cross Jalan College is missing and pedestrians need to cross the road base on their own and can’t rely on the traffic light to stop the cars,” he said in a statement today.
Lam urged DBKU to reinstall the knocked down traffic light pole as well as repaint the zebra crossing.
He also suggested extending the pedestrian crossing time to 20 seconds at the traffic light to allow users to cross the road safely.
“I wish to bring DBKU’s attention to this issue as there are five institutions along Jalan College with more than 5,000 students. The above tasks are crucial for the safety of the students studying there.
“For the short-term, DBKU should improve the traffic light for the safety of students crossing the road, while in the long-term, DBKU should plan to construct a pedestrian overhead bridge for pedestrians to cross the busy Jalan Batu Lintang safely,” said Lam. — DayakDaily
