KUCHING, Feb 22: Daro assemblyman Safiee Ahmad has proposed a bus terminal, a multi-storey carpark, and a boutique hotel in his constituency to keep up with the rapid development taking place.

Speaking during the launching of the Muara Lassa Bridge in Daro, Mukah, today, Safiee said that in the past, there was no need for such facilities in the area as the people relied on express boat services and not many tourists came to the area.

However, with the new 2.43 km-long Muara Lassa Bridge, there is an increase in tourists and road users. While it has had a positive impact on local businesses, it has caused traffic congestion, especially during peak hours.

“Food vendors report that their income has increased after the bridge opened. Previously, we have approved the installation of smart traffic lights to reduce congestion.

“However, with the significant increase in vehicles, we need to find a long-term solution to overcome this problem,” he said.

With the expected completion of more bridges and roads—providing connectivity to the coastal areas—he said commercial bus services would solve the problem and that a multi-storey carpark could accommodate the growing number of road users.

He also stressed the urgent need for more accommodation, including the proposed construction of a boutique hotel, to meet the growing demand of visitors.

“The existing hotels are always full, and there is a high demand for homestays. If we can prepare sufficient accommodation, it will leave a big impact on the local economy,” he said.
