KUCHING, May 2: Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sarawak slams Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari for the latter’s statement attacking the unity government’s Kuala Kubu Baru by-election candidate Pang Sock Tao’s education background, accusing him of behaving immaturelu and not worthy of the “Yang Berhormat” (YB) title.

DAPSY Sarawak Political Education Bureau chief Soo Tien Ren said that Ahmad Fadhli as an MP should behave in a mature manner, instead of immaturely making an issue out of Pang’s educational background while ignoring the discussion of policies and national direction during the by-election campaign period.

On April 28, Ahmad Fadhli challenged Pang to show her UPSR and SPM qualifications after Perikatan Nasional candidate Khairul Azhari Saut’s master’s degree qualification was queried. When Pang produced her straight A results in UPSR and SPM, Ahmad Fadhli then aimed barbs at Pang for not studying in a national school.

Soo asserted Ahmad Fadhli’s statement on April 29 showed the latter’s clear intention of questioning the benefits that Chinese primary and secondary schools bring to the country.

“Therefore, he must explain whether he is challenging the constitutional rights of all races to enjoy mother tongue education. If, as he said in his Facebook post yesterday, he did not oppose vernacular schools, then he should apologise for his previous statements,” said Soo in a statement today.

Soo also said Ahmad Fadhli is not only disrespecting all Malaysians including the Malay students who studied in Chinese schools, but is also disregarding Malaysia’s Federal Constitution.

“In addition, every election should be a platform for political figures to discuss policies and national direction, not a platform for personal attacks. Therefore, Ahmad Fadhli’s statement is truly unworthy of his ‘Yang Berhormat’ title.

“I believe every graduate of vernacular primary and secondary schools love this country as much as those who studied in Sekolah Kebangsaan, and all of us believe that diversity is the cornerstone of this country,” said Soo who further claimed that Ahmad Fadhli’s remarks were an insult all students from vernacular schools.

The Kuala Kubu Baru by-election was called following the passing of its MP Lee Kee Hiong of DAP on March 21, 2024.
