KUCHING, June 22: The Sarawak government has been called to clarify the purpose of the special one-day sitting of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) on July 7, and to respect legislative procedures by extending the session to allow meaningful participation from all elected representatives.
In a statement, Sarawak Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Stampin chief Soo Tien Ren expressed concern over the State government’s decision to convene the one-day sitting.
“As of now, the agenda has not been made public, but sources suggest that it may involve the redelineation of electoral boundaries,” he said.
If it does involve the redelineation of electoral boundaries, Soo said it would be inappropriate to rush it as it would affect Sarawak’s political landscape and future representation.
He added that sufficient time and space must be provided for all elected representatives to debate, voice their views, and ensure that the process is transparent and legitimate.
“Moreover, if this special sitting indeed concerns electoral redelineation, the principles guiding such a process must be clearly defined and fairly applied. In a multicultural society like Malaysia—particularly in Sarawak, where diversity and harmony form the core of our social fabric—constituency delineation must reflect the demographic realities and ensure that all communities, especially minorities, are adequately represented.
“The process must uphold the principle of ‘one person, one vote’ while striking a balance across ethnic and regional lines,” he said.
The one-day DUN sitting was announced on June 20 via an official notice issued by Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar to all 82 members of the Assembly.
However, no reason was provided for the meeting, which is being called under Meeting Order 8(3). — DayakDaily
