DAP’s Chong gets win in Padungan with 1,198 vote-majority

KUCHING, Dec 18: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen wins the N09 Padungan seat in the 12th Sarawak Election.

He defeated Dato Wee Hong Seng from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Lina Soo from Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) and Raymond Thong from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK).

According to the Election Commisson’s (EC) official results, Chong won the seat with a majority of 1,198 votes.


He secured 4,686 votes against Wee who is also Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor who scooped up 3,488 votes, Thong who received 930 votes and Soo who garnered 193 votes.

Chong, who was a three-term assemblyman for Kota Sentosa switched to contest in Padungan for the first time in this election.

The Padungan constituency has a total of 20,949 registered voters.

In the 2016 Sarawak Election, the Padungan seat was won by Wong King Wei contesting under DAP with a 4,270-vote majority.

Wong garnered 9,332 votes against Pau Kiu Sung from Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) who received 5,062 votes and Teo Kuang Kim from State Reform Party who secured 116 votes. — DayakDaily
