KUCHING, May 31: Michael Kong, special assistant to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, has urged the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to engage with the community first and uphold fair, impartial enforcement of laws and regulations.

His remarks follow an incident in which MBKS enforcement officers were quick to remove party flags from a venue under the council’s jurisdiction, yet reportedly took six months to act on vacant MyKiosk units at Tabuan Jaya.

“This is the double standard we would like to highlight. MBKS is quick to act against DAP’s activities, yet slow or entirely silent on issues that truly impact the community,” he said.

He emphasised that laws and regulations must be enforced fairly, consistently, and without political bias.

“MBKS cannot pick and choose which laws to enforce based on political affiliations or convenience,” Kong stressed.

He therefore called on MBKS to engage with the community first, be it political parties and ordinary citizens, before taking any enforcement action.

“This engagement must be meaningful, timely, and genuine.

“Enforce regulations fairly, transparently and in a timely manner if engagement fails, ensuring no one is targeted for their political beliefs.

“Refrain from using enforcement as a tool for political persecution,” he added.

Kong further reminded MBKS of its role as a local authority entrusted with public service.

“The people of Kuching deserve better than politically motivated governance,” he added. – DayakDaily
