KUCHING, March 12: Michael Kong of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) has called upon Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai to prioritise urgent infrastructure projects over what he perceives as ‘extravagant spending’.

In a press statement issued today, Kong, who is the special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, expressed how ‘baffled’ he was with MPP proceeding with plans to spend RM60 million for the construction of a new office building, which he claims is a case of ‘misplaced priority’ rather than a genuine shortage of funds.

“As the MPP chairman, Tan Kai holds significant power and authority to enact significant change and rectify this misallocation of resources.

“It is incumbent upon him to prioritise urgent infrastructure works and halt the trend of extravagant spending,” he said.

Kong went on to say that Tan Kai, in a recent statement, lamented that he only secured RM1.5 million from the Sarawak government.

He then noted that the same government said it has close to RM40 billion in reserves and claimed that this reflected a lack of his ability to advocate for increased funding.

He added that the RM60 million earmarked for the new MPP office building should be redirected to address the urgent needs of Kuching’s back lanes and drains. — DayakDaily
