KUCHING, March 1: The closure of the junction at Moyan in Batu Kawah due to the recent opening of four-lane dual carriageway road on the Pan Borneo Highway has affected the business community of Moyan Square Commercial Centre.
According to George Lam, a special assistant to Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, a day after the closure of the Moyan’s junction, motorists from Bau and Lundu were unable to turn directly into the commercial centre.
“The business community depends on these motorists from Bau or Lundu, and the closure of the junction has caused difficulties as these motorists are most likely their regular customers who come to the commercial centre.
“If they were planning to go there (Moyan Square Commercial Centre), they might need to make a U-turn at Batu Kawah Bazaar, which is approximately 2km away. This is not realistic,” he said in a statement.
“The closure of this junction not only affects the businesses but also the residents of Moyan Square.
“These residents who wanted to go to the town area for work, school and other businesses might need to drive along the highway 1 kilometre towards Bau, and then they can make a U-Turn to go to the town area.
“This too has caused much trouble to the residents in the area,” he added
Lam suggested that the Public Works Department (JKR) re-open the turn at the junction and install a traffic light for the convenience of the residents and businesses in the area.
He pointed out that the business owners and residents have sent numerous letters to the elected representative of Batu Kawah, JKR and even the Works Minister, but have yet to receive any responses from the relevant parties.
“Today, they sought help from DAP (Democratic Action Party) and I will go over to JKR office, to raise this issue and with the relevant agencies,” he said. — DayakDaily
