DAP leader urges MBKS mayor to rise to meet people’s expectations

KUCHING, Dec 25: The mayor of a city cannot expect its multiracial citizens to go easy on their expectations but instead must strive to manage and meet these expectations proactively with professionalism, leadership, wisdom and humility.

Michael Kong, the special Assistant to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen, in highlighting this, reminded Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng that he is a mayor for the people including the Malays, Dayaks, Chinese and Indians.

“Therefore he should not expect anyone, not only the Chinese, to let him go easy if he is busy playing politics and not doing his job properly,” he said in a statement today.

Kong was responding to the remarks by Wee on Dec 19 stating that the Chinese should not make things difficult for the Chinese after being criticised by Kong for focusing his services in Padungan and neglecting other areas like Pending, Batu Lintang and Kota Sentosa which were also under MBKS jurisdiction.

Expecting Wee to be able to distinguish between constructive and destructive criticism, Kong stressed all that was asked was for Wee to extend his walks to areas within other constituencies like Kota Sentosa as well as to push for equal allocations for all assemblymen regardless of political affiliations.

“Stampin Resettlement Scheme has been plagued with issues for decades and Wee Hong Seng should make the effort to go there to see the issues for himself.

“Even in a few of my letters to MBKS, I have invited Wee Hong Seng to go down to see the issues together so that he can understand the plight,” he emphasised.

Unfortunately, Kong said, Wee has yet to accept the offer to work together for the betterment of the people.

“While other people may not post photos of themselves working, it does not necessarily mean that they are not doing anything. For Wee Hong Seng to belittle the work and/or efforts of others is deeply regrettable, especially when he is a mayor,” he said, expressing his disappointment.

Respecting that Wee has the liberty to make tangyuan or glutinous sweet dumplings during his free time, Kong stressed that with knowledge of all the pressing issues that the residents of Kuching South faced especially flash floods during this monsoon season, the DAP Stampin Parliamentary team will continue to walk around and try to solve the people’s problems. — DayakDaily
