Dalat’s homegrown Tanam brand makes waves, potential to go international

KUCHING, Dec 19: Kampung Tanam in Dalat has an international brand of its own now, featuring a series of clothing and accessories with the design based on Melanau sunhat, better known as Sera’o, Tapou or Terendak.

Dalat assemblywoman Datuk Seri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah said the brand ‘Tanam: A New Dawn of an Exquisite Legacy’ would see to the penetration of Sarawak’s culture into international platforms.


She added that this project, a collaboration between the Tapou Ladies of Kampung Tanam, artisans of the Terendak making, and the international award-winning technology company SOCOE Sdn Bhd, has already yielded results.

“We have collaborated with SOCOE which would be digitally marketing these Sera’o design products such as ties, scarves, shirts and fabrics utilising the latest technology to reach a global audience.

“These products with the name ‘Tanam’ have already received orders from Hong Kong and Melbourne, Australia,” she said at the officiating ceremony of Dalat Waterfront Phase Two and BazaarNita Fatima Dalat by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg earlier today.

Of course, this was revealed in conjunction with the opening of BazaarNita Fatima whereby the building design was also based on the same Melanau culture.

Fatimah, who is also Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister said a total of 183 of these Melanau Sera’o by The Tapou Ladies were used as interior decoration at the Dalat BazaarNita Fatima.

Meanwhile, SOCOE Chief Executive Officer Sam Wong, in a statement later today, applauded Fatimah’s vision and initiative in this collaboration to preserve the legacy and culture of local artisans, as well as to innovate these arts to global markets and standards.

“These women (The Tapou Ladies) have a flair for creativity and art; combined with the universal appeal but yet not overly embellished.

“Accompanied with our program that facilitates them through our companies professional technical and business expertise, we are confident in bringing them to new heights and opportunities,” remarked Wong while observing the brand’s potential in penetrating existing global market trends.
