SIBU, Sept 10: Sellers are lowering the price of dabai to between RM10 to RM48 per kg, making it an opportune time for fans of the fruit to get their fix.
Not long ago, sellers were selling it for as high as RM90 per kg, causing people to dub it a “heavenly price” (harga kayangan).
With prices now at more affordable levels, some people have joked that perhaps the price plummet is due to the visit of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
The King together with his Queen Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah are scheduled to visit the Sibu Central Market on Sept 12 as part of their ‘Kembara Kenali Borneo’ tour of Sabah and Sarawak.
A quick survey at the central market showed that dabai prices have dropped due to abundant supply.
A seller who only wanted to be identified as Awie, 32, said the drop in the price of dabai was due to oversupply of the fruit as it is in season now.
“I get most of this dabai from Song. This dabai is a seasonal fruit. If it is not the season then the price will be quite expensive due to low supply.
“That’s why the price of dabai was very expensive,” he said.
Awie said he had been busy these few days attempting to woo customers to buy the fruit.
“Response has been overwhelming, especially among the fans. For dabai lovers, they don’t care about the price because the price depends on the quality and size of the dabai.
“The more dabai fruit is produced, the lower the price will be,” he stressed.
As dabai has a short storage life, most sellers are not selling it at an expensive price now because they want to clear their stock as soon as possible. — DayakDaily
