Customs seizes gift-wrapped packages filled with 8.1kg worth of drugs

KUCHING, July 31: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) seized about 8.1 kg of drugs worth RM324,800 at Kuching International Airport (KIA) yesterday.

Sarawak Customs director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha said the substances, believed to be Methamphetamine, were found during an inspection on luggage belonging to a local man in his 20s after he arrived from Kuala Lumpur at 8.55pm.

“Upon scanning of luggage at the passenger arrival hall, customs officers noticed suspicious images, prompting them to conduct a thorough check on the luggage.

“They found six packages wrapped with fancy paper. This led to the discovery of eight packets inside the bigger packages of crystal-like substances believed to be Methamphetamine,” she said in a statement today.

Sharifah Halimah said that the packages were wrapped in fancy wrapping paper to foil or confuse the customs officers on duty.

The suspect has been remanded for seven days under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries mandatory death sentence if found guilty.—DayakDaily
