KUCHING, Aug 22: Sarawak’s 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) cash incentives of RM15,000 for champions, RM5,000 for silver winners and RM3,000 for bronze medallists are only applicable to individual victors.

For group winners, Youth and Sports Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah assured that they will also be rightly awarded as they are also contributors to Sarawak’s achievements in Sukma 2024, which will come to an end on Aug 24.

He said the Sarawak Cabinet has tasked Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki to look into the issue and formulate a reward system for those who have won medals for Sarawak as a team.

“What Premier (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg) said was individuals will get RM15,000 (for gold medalists) but for teams, it will depend on how many in a team.

“The reward system for teams will be quite different from that of individual winners. Once they finalise the team reward system, it will be made known to all,” Abdul Karim who is also Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts told DayakDaily.

Last Friday (Aug 16), Abang Johari had announced that each medal won by an athlete will net them a cash incentive of RM15,000, followed by RM5,000 for silver and RM3,000 for bronze.

Following that, queries have been raised by winning athletes involved in team events whether the same reward system will be applicable to them.

This had led to the media conveying their concern to Abdul Karim who raised it in a monthly Cabinet meeting which happened to convene today at Wisma Bapa Malaysia. — DayakDaily
