Covid-19: Sarawak records one fatality in Miri, 512 new cases

KUCHING, April 17: Sarawak recorded one Covid-19 fatality in Miri and a total of 512 new infection cases today.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said Bintulu recorded the highest number of cases today with 149 cases, followed by Selangau (105), Sibu (95), Kuching (37), Miri (22), Mukah (17), Samarahan (15), Song (12), Kapit (12), Serian (9), Matu (9), Asajaya (6), Betong (5), Tatau (5), Bukit Mabong (3), Meradong (2), Kanowit (2), Saratok (2), Subis (1), Beluru (1), Kabong (1), Belaga(1) and Marudi (1).

“This brings the total number of positive Covid-19 cases in Sarawak to 23,432 cases,” he said during the daily Covid-19 press conference held at the old State Legislative Assembly building in Petra Jaya, here today.


Uggah noted, from the 512 new positive cases reported, a total of 34 individuals had shown symptoms of Covid-19 infection when the screen test was conducted.

He said 421 other positive individuals were detected from those who were placed under  the quarantine order.

“A total of 254 cases involved individuals who are a close contact with positive Covid-19 cases (7 symptomatic), 167 cases were from screen tests conducted in the healthcare facility, while 25 cases are from symptomatic individuals in healthcare facilities,” he added.

Meanwhile, Uggah disclosed the 136th fatality was case number 22,655, involving a 67-year-old local woman who sought medical treatment in Miri Hospital for fatigue and lack of appetite since last week.

“Her rt-PCR test returned positive on April 13, 2021, where her condition deteriorated before she passed away on the same day (April 13), and the case also has heart comorbidity. SDMC extended its deepest condolences to all family members of the deceased,” he said.

On another note, Uggah said a total of 410 Covid-19 cases have recovered and allowed to be discharged from the hospitals and Low-Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centres (PKRC) in the state.

He said the cases are namely from Sarawak General Hospital (132), followed by Bintulu Hospital PKRC (63), Sarikei Hospital (59), Sibu Hospital PKRC (55), Miri Hospital PKRC (39), PKRC Mukah (32), Kapit Hospital PKRC (18), Sri Aman Hospital (4), Limbang Hospital (3), Sri Aman Prison PKRC (3), Serian PKRC (1) and Betong PKRC (1).

“This brings the total number of recovered and discharged Covid-19 cases to 18,077 cases (77.15 per cent) from the total number of positive Covid-19 recorded in the State.

“Currently a total of 5,151 individuals are being isolated in the hospitals wards and PKRC,” he said. — DayakDaily
