KUCHING, April 30: Covid-19 will continue to spread even though many standard operating procedures (SOPs) are now optional because the virus ‘didn’t get the memo.’

This was the response of Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Sarawak branch chairman Dr Teh Siao Hean when asked to comment on the lifting of mandatory face masks and social distancing starting May 1.

Dr Teh, who is also Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) consultant general paediatrician, said it is at the public’s discretion now that the government is no longer as strict with the SOPs.

“When there’s less or no people around, and you’d like to exercise or jog outside, by all means. But if you go to crowded or popular restaurants, please keep your face masks on at least until the food is served.

“These are some of the common sense things for everyone to keep in mind,” he said when attending Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng’s Facebook live session as a guest today.

Agreeing with Dr Teh, Wee advised all Sarawakians to remain vigilant, especially with the upcoming major celebrations of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai Dayak.

“During festive seasons, it is up to yourself now to decide. For example, if too many people are at open houses, you may choose not to attend.

“For some occasions where you can’t skip, take the necessary precautions. Wear your face masks properly,” he said. — DayakDaily
