KUCHING, April 4: Sarawak recorded 419 new Covid-19 cases in one day, its second worst daily total, just a few cases short of the record high 426 cases reported on March 28.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the sudden spike was due to a new prison cluster with 159 positive cases detected in Sri Aman Central Prison.

Coming next after Sri Aman in terms of highest number of new cases were Bintulu with 57 cases, Sibu (54), Miri (34), Sarikei (32), Serian (17), Meradong (17), Marudi (9), Beluru (8), Kanowit (5), Kapit (5), Saratok (5), Julau (4), Sebauh (3), Kuching (3), Matu (2), Lawas (2), Mukah (1), Selangau (1) and Dalat (1).

Thus, the cumulative number of positive cases in Sarawak now stands at 17,554.
