Covid-19: 60 positive cases recorded nationwide today

KUCHING, May 24: Malaysia today reported 60 new positive cases of Covid-19 with no fatality.

Health director general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement said out of the 60 new cases, seven cases were imported from overseas and the balance of 53 cases involved local transmission.

Elaborating further, he explained that out of the 53 new cases from local transmission, 44 cases involved foreigners whereby 27 foreigners were detected at the Semenyih Immigration detention centre and six cases at a new cluster for Immigration detention centre in Sepang.


He disclosed there were three clusters which involved Immigration detention centres in the Klang Valley that reported new positive cases of Covid-19 today.

They are the Semenyih Immigration detention centre which reported 28 new cases, Bukit Jalil Immigration detention centre which reported eight new cases and Sepang Immigration detention centre which reported six new cases.

With an additional 60 new cases, Dr Noor Hisham noted the cumulative number of Covid-19 positive cases has increased to 7,245 as of May 24.

He asserted that the total active Covid-19 cases in the country stood at 1,185 out of which nine patients are being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while four patients requires intubation.

On another note, Dr Noor Hisham said although today is a public holiday in Malaysia due to the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, many frontliners are still working on the field.

Thus, he hoped the community can play a bigger role to curb the Covid-19 pandemic in the country by complying with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the festive season.

He said MoH extends its appreciation to all the frontliners including the staff from the Health Ministry who are committed and dedicated to serve during Hari Raya Aidilfitri. -DayakDaily
