Covid-19: 152 factory workers form Muara Tabuan Cluster, 49 more cases form Jalan Coastal Bintulu-Miri Cluster

KUCHING, May 31: A total of 152 workers and staff of a factory in Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone here tested positive for Covid-19, igniting the Muara Tabuan Cluster.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement said of the total positive cases from this workplace cluster, 16 were detected today.


“A total of 500 individuals have been screened whereby 152 people tested positive for Covid-19, 157 were negative and 191 are awaiting laboratory results.

“All positive cases were referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and Serian Hospital before admitted to Kuching and Serian Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRCs) for isolation and further treatment,” the committee said.

Previously, the company identified as Taiyo Yuden (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd reported a total of 128 positive cases as of May 28, before shutting down its operations for 14 days.

SDMC also revealed that the cluster is related to the Jalan Simpang Tiga cluster which was declared on May 21.

Another workplace cluster was also detected today involving a workers’ quarters at a smelting factory located at Jalan Coastal Bintulu-Miri, Similajau in Bintulu.

As many as 43 cases of the Jalan Coastal Bintulu-Miri Cluster were detected today.

A total of 1,574 individuals have been screened whereby 49 people tested positive for Covid-19, 1,135 tested negative and 390 are awaiting laboratory results.

All positive cases were referred to Bintulu Hospital and admitted to Bintulu PKRC for isolation and further treatment.

SDMC also revealed the end of Ulu Strass Cluster in Meradong after no new local infections were reported in the last 28 days.

At present, there are 82 active clusters in the State with eight of them recording an increase of 91 new cases. — DayakDaily
