KUCHING, May 9: A papaya tree growing near the boys’ dormitory at SMK Julau No. 2 has recently caught the public’s attention due to its impressive height and potential in becoming the next world record holder.
The tree was brought to light in a post on Facebook by a user known as ‘Cikgu Masli’, who said that the tree currently stands at a height of 14.40m, making it among the tallest papaya trees ever recorded in the country.
He also revealed that Brazil holds the record for the tallest papaya tree in the world, with a height of 14.55m, just 0.15m (15cm) taller than the one in Julau.
In a TVS report, Cikgu Masli, whose real name is Abang Masli Abang Wellie, said he planted the tree in 2013.
According to the Guinness World Records, Brazilians Tarcísio Foltz and Gilberto Franz discovered the world’s tallest papaya tree, which was verified in Nova Aurora, Paraná, Brazil, on September 2, 2021.
The previous record holder for the tallest papaya tree was in India. The tree grown by Jhantu Paul measured 14.08m tall. — DayakDaily
