KUCHING, Aug 9: The police are currently in pursuit of a suspect who crashed a stolen vehicle into a police car after being instructed to stop at Jalan Bau-Krokong yesterday at approximately 6.50am.
According to a statement released today by Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata, prior to the incident, a team of police officers from the Bau district police headquarters who were conducting ‘Op Lejang Khas’ in the area had followed a suspicious-looking vehicle.
“When the police tried to stop the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect’s vehicle crashed into the police vehicle. Officers on duty fired in self-defense at the suspect’s vehicle, but the suspect escaped and fled in the direction of Krokong, Bau.
“Early investigations revealed that the silver Toyota Land Cruiser reported stolen in Kuching was discovered abandoned in an oil palm plantation in Gumbang.
“Ongoing efforts are made to locate the suspect who is believed to have escaped,” he said.
The case is being investigated for attempted murder in accordance with Section 307 of the Penal Code, which, if proven guilty, carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine.
