KUCHING, Aug 7: A 57-year-old contractor was sentenced to nine months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today after pleading guilty to physically assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute more than two years ago.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan handed down the sentence and ordered that the jail term take effect immediately.
The accused, who was unrepresented, admitted to a charge under the Penal Code for causing hurt to his spouse.
The offence took place on the night of May 26, 2022, at a rented house along Jalan Traffic Garden, during an argument between the couple over a car battery.
According to the facts of the case, the victim, who was 37 at the time, had reviewed CCTV footage on her mobile phone and discovered that her husband had removed the battery from her car.
When she confronted him and requested the car keys to inspect the vehicle, he flew into a rage and struck her multiple times.
She was hit on the side of her head, the back of her neck, and above her left eye, leaving her with visible bruises and swelling. Fearing for her safety, the victim lodged a police report.
A medical examination later confirmed her injuries, while CCTV footage and a statement from another female tenant in the same house corroborated the incident.
The accused was arrested two days later, on May 28, 2022. At the time, the couple was reportedly in the process of divorcing.
