Construction academy student tests positive for Covid-19, infects 14 people

KUCHING, May 26: A student of a construction academy at Jalan Sultan Tengah here has tested positive for Covid-19 and infected 14 other people which gave rise to a new cluster named the Akedemi Semariang Cluster.

According to reports from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the Akedemi Semariang Cluster is a skill institution cluster which involves a construction academy.


“The index case of the cluster is case 39,076 who is a student of the academy identified through pre-screening before returning back to the academy after the holidays on May 17.

“The student tested positive on May 18,” it said.

SDMC added a total of 70 individuals related to the cluster have been screened.

Out of that number of people, 15 individuals including the index case have tested positive for Covid-19, 15 individuals tested negative and the balance of 40 individuals are awaiting the results of their Covid-19 swab test.

In the meantime, all the positive cases have been admitted to Sarawak General Hospital and quarantine and low-risk treatment centres in Kuching for isolation and further treatment.

The Akedemi Semariang Cluster is one of the four new clusters of Covid-19 identified in Sarawak today.

The other three new clusters are the Kampung Semerah Padi Cluster in Kuching, Jalan Sukma Cluster in Kuching and Lubok Nitik Cluster in Saratok.

With additional four new clusters identified, there are a total of 87 active clusters of Covid-19 in Sarawak.

Out of the 87 active clusters, 14 active clusters reported 95 new cases of Covid-19.

The balance of 73 active clusters report zero cases of Covid-19.

On another note, there is one cluster of Covid-19, the Tabuan Melayu Cluster in Kuching which ended after reporting zero cases in the past 28 days. — DayakDaily
