KUCHING, March 8: Construction on a new water treatment plant at Sungai Lawas Damit is expected to begin this year, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report, he said that the plant would complement the Trusan Water Treatment Plant, which is the main water supply source in the district.

The plant will be operated by the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) as the implementing agency, thus strengthening the government’s ability to ensure better access to clean water for the community.

This project will benefit residents around Long Tuma to SMK Merapok in addition to opening up opportunities for expanding coverage to Kampung Long Sukang and surrounding areas through a reticulation system.

“The new plant will increase the water supply capacity in line with infrastructure development, especially roads.

“With the funds received and technical studies conducted, we expect this project to begin this year,” he said when met by the media after the Trusan Village Expansion Scheme (SPK) affordable housing launching ceremony in Lawas today.

Meanwhile, Awang Tengah also said that Trusan is undergoing redevelopment to make it a major stopover destination in northern Sarawak.

According to him, Trusan has the potential to become a trade hub, with the Sarawak Northern Coastal Highway passing through the town.

“As a measure to support development in this area, a new bridge will be built to improve access and smooth movement of residents and traders.

“Various new facilities will be provided, including modern business premises, a market, and a more organised trade area, to ensure sustainable economic growth.

“We want Trusan to develop as a modern town but at the same time maintain its original identity and uniqueness. With careful planning, we are confident that it will not only become an important economic centre but also a new attraction for tourists,” he said. — DayakDaily
