KUCHING, Aug 25: Miri will have its own convention centre as early as 2025, says Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) quoting Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during a courtesy call by the Miri Business Events Committee (MBEC) yesterday.
According to BESarawak’s statement today, Abdul Karim also said Miri has plenty of potential as a business events destination especially with international corporations opening Asia Pacific offices in Miri and the surrounding areas.
A new convention centre in Miri will attract more business visitors to Sarawak and at the same time become a versatile venue for festivals, sporting and other public events, he added.
In the same discussion, Miri City Council (MCC) mayor and MBEC chairman Adam Yii said Miri’s value proposition would increase tenfold with a purpose-built convention centre.
He said the MBEC committee would gladly collaborate closely with Abdul Karim’s ministry to make Sarawak’s second convention centre after Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) a reality.
Meanwhile, BESarawak chief executive officer (CEO) Amelia Roziman said MBEC would draw up a Miri Business Events Masterplan to navigate growth and regulate present and future development of Miri.
“BESarawak will support this activity to ensure that Miri’s development is in line with the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, where business events play a major role in achieving the strategy’s aspirations,” she said.
During the courtesy call, MBEC had also presented to Abdul Karim the latest calendar activities for Miri which includes a legacy workshop, Congress Certification Programme Plus workshop, the #TRIBESPIRIT team building for industry partners, and the launch of Ambassadors Club in conjunction with TriBE Assembly. — DayakDaily
