KUCHING, March 18: Companies licensed to perform sand mining in Sarawak must make contributions to villages close to their licensed area, based on an initiative introduced by the Sarawak government.

Land and Survey Sarawak director Datu Abdullah Julaihi said in a statement today such initiatives can, to some extent, help the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) in implementing activities in respective villages.

He said this while handing over donation checks amounting to RM3,000 each to three villages at a local hotel in Miri on March 17.

The contribution was made by Magna Focus Sdn Bhd through a social responsibility fund as a licensee to extract sand in Kuala Baram and part of Batang Baram.

The recipients were Head of Kampung Masjid, Kuala Baram Yusree Haji Zainuzzam, Tuai Rumah Asam Manggong of Sungai Pedada Longhouse, Asam Paya and Tuai Rumah Budin Sandai of Rumah Panjang Sindar, Assam Paya.

Such a programme is an ongoing activity of the Sarawak government which is implemented in stages for villages near the license areas throughout Sarawak.

The donation check handover ceremony was held in conjunction with the Landas Gives Back (CSR) Programme which aims to strengthen the relationship between the licensees, villagers and the Sarawak Land and Survey Department.

Also present were Land and Survey deputy managing director Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmood and Magna Focus Sdn Bhd representative Ahmad Daud Manan. — DayakDaily
