KUCHING, Oct 15: Mental health challenges are becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s fast-paced society, and awareness programmes are vital to help the public understand mental health, overcome stigma, and seek help when needed.

In line with this, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) organised the “Mental Health Awareness Talk” in conjunction with World Mental Health Day today to promote understanding and encourage community engagement on mental wellbeing.

Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng expressed his gratitude to the organisers and participants for their efforts in promoting mental health awareness and fostering a caring community in Kuching.

“This meaningful programme reflects our shared responsibility to care for both physical and mental wellbeing. Good mental health is the foundation of a resilient and compassionate society,” he said in his text speech delivered by Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili at the event held at MBKS Headquarters today.

He noted that the rise in life pressures, workplace demands, and social stress has made mental health challenges more common, underscoring the importance of awareness initiatives.

Organised in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and aligned with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, the event aimed to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all. Two guest speakers, DrNur Iwana Abdul Taib from Unimas and Dr Fairuz Rahim from Sentosa Hospital, shared insights and practical advice on managing mental health and building community resilience.

Wee also acknowledged the contributions of supporting organisations, including Teduh Jiwa Counselling and Consultancy, Dee Hati Centre for Grief, Bereavement and Trauma, Yayasan Kebajikan Negara, Mental Health Association Sarawak, and Inspire Create Company.

“Their involvement strengthens the community support network for mental wellness,” he added.

MBKS reaffirmed its commitment to building a caring and sustainable Kuching, fostering a community that values mental health, empathy, and mutual support, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
