Commercial crime in Sibu ‘under control’ despite increase in total losses, says police chief

SIBU, July 30: Commercial crime continues to be a cause for concern here with a significant increase in losses.

For the first six months of this year, a total of RM10.23 million in losses was reported compared to RM6.66 million reported in 2023.

“A total of 265 investigation papers were opened and 218 cases were successfully resolved, representing a success rate of 82 per cent,” said Sibu District police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili.

Speaking at the Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD) Monthly parade today, he said despite the increase in the crime rate in Sibu District for the same period this year, the situation is under control.

A total of 357 crime cases were reported with a resolution rate of 87.96 per cent or 314 cases.

However, Zulkipli said, the crime index increased by 74.15 per cent with 152 cases compared to the same period last year.

“The number of arrests in narcotics crime cases has also increased by 66 arrests, making the total number of arrests 687.

“However, the amount of drug seizures decreased to RM722,297 compared to RM975,147 recorded in the previous year,” he added.

The Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division issued 31,259 summonses with compounds totaling RM 567,320 throughout the period.

There were 15 fatal accident cases recorded during the first half of this year.

Zulkipli expressed his appreciation to all parties involved in efforts to curb crime and emphasised the importance of discipline and commitment in carrying out duties.

He also called on all members to continue to focus on crime prevention and improve the quality of investigations to ensure public safety and well-being in Sibu. — DayakDaily
