KUCHING, July 18: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has provided an update on the status of a fire-damaged property in Tabuan Jaya here, highlighting efforts to clear and repair the site, which has been a concern for the local community for nearly a year.
The property, which was significantly damaged by a fire last year, has been under close scrutiny by the city council.
“Our responsibility at the city council is to follow up and locate the property owner,” Wee stated in a video posted today on his official Facebook page.
“In the aftermath of the fire, we contacted all property owners, convened meetings, and issued several notices to trace the owner,” the mayor said.
Despite issuing multiple notices and letters, the council faced challenges in locating the property owner.
Wee highlighted the collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and the police to expedite the process.
“We issued several notices and, after the final notice expired on June 28, 2024, our Standing Committee decided to enter the premises with Bomba and police assistance,” he explained.
According to him, the situation escalated when a recent storm caused further damage to the already vulnerable structure.
“Strong winds blew off parts of the roof, posing a significant public safety hazard.
“In response, we served a final notice under the Building Ordinance and Land Ordinance of 1996 to the property owner,” he noted.
Wee went on to say that a representative of the property owner responded after receiving the final notice and initiated the cleanup process on July 14.
Early this morning, cleanup operations commenced at 5.30am. The mayor expressed hope that the owner would continue the repairs to prevent any adverse effects on the neighbouring properties.
Wee further acknowledged the challenges in locating the property owner and resolving the situation but stressed the importance of proactive measures.
“It was not easy to find the property owner, but we have done our best to handle the situation. It’s crucial to address these issues promptly.”
He also called for cooperation from elected representatives and the community, emphasising action over criticism.
“It is important to take practical steps to complete what needs to be done rather than just pointing fingers. We hope the property owner will maintain the property and ensure it does not negatively impact the neighbours,” he added.
The council will continue to monitor the cleanup and repair progress to ensure the property is restored and no longer poses a risk to the surrounding area. — DayakDaily
