KUCHING, Dec 14: Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate for N9 Padungan Chong Chieng Jen has asked Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor and GPS candidate Datuk Wee Hong Seng if the latter plans to demolish the KMC flats and have a private developer develop the land into expensive commercial and residential units for profit.

Chong said he visited KMC flats a few days ago and was informed that many units there were vacant while certain units have no residents.

“There are two units at the Betong block of the KMC flats where almost all the window panes were removed and the condition within clearly showed that these units had not been inhabited for a long time.

“Due to its strategic location, there are many people, especially the poor and hardcore poor who are working in the city, applying to MBKS to be the tenants for certain units of the flats.

“Many of these applicants were told that there was no vacancy,” he said in a press statement today.

Chong asked why MBKS did not rent out the vacant units to the poor but let those vacant units stay uninhabited.

Chong pointed out that Wee, as MBKS mayor is dutybound to provide an answer whether it is election time or not as the matter affects hundreds of tenants and their families. — DayakDaily
