KUCHING, Sept 1: The success of the 10th National Independent Chinese High School Ball Game Championship shows that the Chinese independent education system can effectively cultivate talents in both academics and sports.
President of the Federation of Chinese Associations of Sarawak, Dato Richard Wee, said having talents in both fields will build students’ character for the country and assets that belong to the nation.
“We would like to thank the Sarawak government for their strong and unwavering support towards the event hosted for the first time in Kuching and the State,” he said.
Wee, who is also the chairman of the organising committee for the event, said this in his speech during the closing ceremony held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night (Aug 31).
He said they are grateful that over the years, Chinese independent schools have received strong support and due recognition from the Sarawak government.
“The Sarawak government recognises the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) that will enable students to apply for loans and scholarships from Yayasan Sarawak and to join the Sarawak civil service,” he said.
Wee shared that Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is a leader who strongly advocates education as the equaliser for all, irrespective of whether someone is rich or poor or from the urban or rural area.
“Such beliefs from our Premier are indeed an inspiration for us all,” he said.
A total of 1,700 participants from 43 Chinese independent schools nationwide participated in badminton, basketball, table tennis, and volleyball at the inauguration championship held in Kuching from August 27-31.
